about
Flower Girl is a very personal song I wrote for a very special girl. It is theatrical in its presentation and typical of the "circus-y" style for which I am known. Yet, it is not wholly like anything else I have ever written. "Enter The Ringmaster" is the closest thing I can compare it to.
This is the original version, on which I performed all the parts. Drums, bass, guitars, keyboards and vocals. Special thanks to Naythen Wilson for letting me record drums at his studio in Augusta. And thanks to my flower girl.
lyrics
Just a simple man, live a simple life.
A lonely mortician am I.
Keep a simple home, never took a wife.
Never could quite find the time.
I'm where people turn to die
at the end of life.
And yet, I'm not living.
The booze is all gone now, along with the sun
so push the bereaved out the door.
And pack up your bibles, along with your guns
'cause I don't believe anymore.
Living in a daze, playing out my life
under a monochrome sky.
Passively I graze, have no want or strife.
Never once stopped to ask why.
Then, by chance, I saw a girl
following behind
the grim procession.
So come in, seek shelter, the streets run with blood
and civil blood still leaves a stain.
So I'll bring a storm cloud to conjure a flood
and wash it away with the rain.
Little flower girl, lighting up the world,
black roses and fire in her eyes.
Couldn't tell you why, when she looks at me
I suddenly don't want to die.
I must stay and protect her.
Guard her with my life
and keep her as mine.
